Abstarct
The main focus of the project is to investigate Hispanic bilinguals’ use of the Spanish preterit and imperfect in Monterey County, and to analyze the factors that contribute to language maintenance in the community. Twenty early bilinguals participated in this study. Data was collected through spontaneous narratives of the story “Little Red Riding Hood.”
The results suggest that the interviews population does not seem to show aspectual erosion as opposed to other bilingual communities in the United States, like those investigated by Montrul(2009) and Toribio (2001). The in-depth analysis of the social factors in the interviewed community appears to show that language maintenance is largely due to the close-nit community in which participants live and to its linguistic unity.
