This informative course dealt with the different ways of translating various texts from Spanish to English and vise-versa. Some may not be aware of the different way translation happens. There is communicative translation and there is the direct, word-for-word approach. Most bilingual translators use the latter method because they try to make it sound as identical as possible but most end up resulting in an unnatural non-native language. For instance if you take the English phrase, whats up? and translate it word for word it would be, "que hay arriba?" which pretty much means nothing in Spanish . This type of expression can often lose the original meaning when translating to a different language. Idiomatic expressions as well as idioms simply can not be translated directly or word for word.
A more flexible way of translating is communicative translation. The purpose of communicative translation is for both parties to get the gist of what the translation signifies, making it as easy as possible for both parties to comprehend. Habitually these words tend to sound dissimilar but provide a correct translation. We went over common problematic vocabulary that shows up frequently. Most of these Latin-derived vocabulary terms turn out being used incorrectly. Depending on one's language skill, bilinguals usually have an easier time translating from their mother tongue. We were assigned to translate short stories and I learned a ton about other class mate's interpretation of the text. At the end of the semester we were to translate a three thousand word section of a book of our liking so I decided to do it on one of my favorite history books on Native Americans and the Spanish.
