I completed my service learning at the Central Coast Citizen Project at Taylor Farms. My duty consisted of helping out 2-3 adults with the citizenship test. This included helping them out with their English pronunciation. In addition, I had to ask them questions as if they were officially taking the United States citizenship test. It would get quite repetitive but even I got to learn about dated information that I didn't seem to know all that much about. Some of the questions are of questionable importance but the learners get to learn a tad about the United States and its history. It was a truly special experience because they would refer to us as "the ones from the university" it made me feel flattered because it made me feel as though I was having quite a positive impact on my community. Some of my students were a bit shy about their English ability but I quickly comforted them by saying I was most certainly not going to mock them. Having studied five languages I know pronouncing a new language can get somewhat daunting at first. Some suggestions I gave my students was to first to learn the English alphabet fluently. English as well as Spanish, use the Roman alphabet so it is crucial for individuals to learn correctly how to pronounce letters in both languages. Another issue I discovered with my students is that they memorize the answers by order. So once you modify the order they quickly encounter difficulties. This is undoubtedly caused my their relatively limited knowledge of the English language. Overall, I greatly enjoyed being their teacher for a semester. Moreover, they made me laugh all the time. It made me feel as though I was an official teacher.
