In this course we were taught different business aspects of the Spanish speaking world. We learned the importance of Knowing Spanish, especially in the Americas and Spain. One of the fist topics were went over was applying for a job in Spanish. This was especially useful because we seldom get to experience business terms in Spanish. When looking for job opportunities or hiring individuals, it's critical to be direct as well as franc. We were introduced to cognates, which are words that originate from Latin so they sound similar in English and Spanish but can have surprisingly different meanings. Spotting these sneaky vocabulary words is critical to bilingual speakers because the words can seem correct and often go by unnoticed my the general public. I should note that native Spanish speakers usually borrow the corresponding English word when there is doubt about the word in Spanish or when there is uncertainty about the word in Spanish. We learned about the subjunctive tense which in Spanish is greatly used. The subjective tense is used when volition or desire is present. Its also used when uncertainty is involved. This makes it super difficult for a Spanish learner to properly utilize this tense. This is because its not as transparent in the English language. Most often than not Spanish learners simply omit this tense. The subjunctive tense can be used when an employer is recruiting an individual. Even though the employer might not now the person, he/she is well aware of the attributes he/she seeks. We were briefly introduced to translating legal documents which proves to be quite daunting. Translating documents takes extra focus because a single mistake can bring about misunderstandings but more importantly expensive legal consequences. Some Spanish business terms are adopted from the English language. For example, marketing would be "mercadeo" in Spanish but habitually Spanish speakers will say "el Merketing." After all English is the universal language of Business. This course brought to light the fact that we have to be conscious about word choice in the Spanish Business sector.
